Understanding and Addressing Addiction:
From Neurobiology to Long-Term Recovery
During the past 50 years since the birth of the National Institutes on Drug Abuse (NIDA) and Alcohol Abuse and Alcoholism (NIAAA) a great deal has been discovered about the etiology, epidemiology, 类型学, phenomenology, and clinical and recovery support services that can address substance use disorders effectively. New insights into genetics, 表观遗传学, and neurobiology have increased understanding of how some individuals are more susceptible to addiction while others are more protected by virtue of their DNA and how the neurocircuitry of the brain is impacted. These facts have given rise to novel interventions and services that can facilitate healing and long-term remission. This presentation will examine the multifactorial and dynamic elements involved in the onset and progression of substance use disorders and discusses the ingredients necessary to facilitate remission and stable recovery.
